Unmet Needs in Emergency Care

Over 50% of annual deaths in low-middle-income countries (LMICs) could be averted through access to high-quality Emergency Care. In 2007, the World Health Assembly highlighted the importance of providing cohesive emergency care structures that can provide safe, effective care to patients presenting with time-sensitive complaints.

Despite its necessity and monumental impact on patients, emergency services are often overstretched and underfunded, and nowhere is this felt more than in low resource settings where not only is equipment limited but disease burden is heavy, working conditions are poor and staff burnout is high.

OCEAN is committed to improving working conditions and access to high-quality emergency care in these environments through international collaboration. Our partnerships with clinicians and educators at local hospitals allow us to establish where the need is greatest and work together to determine new infrastructures, develop safe clinical guidelines and improve patient outcomes.

Emergency Medicine is a young, developing specialty in LMICs and OCEAN’s mission is to provide a driving force in building safe, reliable structures and reduce health inequality through partnership and innovation.
